Most garden clearances in Birmingham cost £220–£1,000, including taking the waste away. A light clearance is usually £220–£320, a moderate one £380–£600 and a heavy one £650–£1,000. A garden that has been left for years, or is full of rubbish as well as growth, is priced after a free look.
These are the ranges our quote form uses for garden clearance in Birmingham and the West Midlands. They are what homeowners, landlords and executors typically pay.
Garden clearance prices
| How much work | What it usually looks like | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Light | A tidy-up: long grass, weeds, a few overgrown shrubs | £220–£320 |
| Moderate | Borders lost, brambles taking hold, a season or two of neglect | £380–£600 |
| Heavy | Waist-high growth, dense brambles, self-seeded saplings | £650–£1,000 |
| Abandoned | Years of neglect, rubbish, hidden hazards | Free survey |
All of these include loading and taking the green waste away to a licensed site. For more on the jobs themselves, see overgrown garden clearance and bramble clearance.
Green waste collection only
If you have already cut everything back and just need it taken away, you pay by load size. See green waste removal.
| Load | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Car boot | £80 |
| Quarter van | £120 |
| Half van | £190 |
| Three-quarter van | £260 |
| Full van | £330 |
Shed removal
Taking down and removing a garden shed is usually about £150 for a small shed, £220 for a medium one and £300 for a large one. See shed removal. Old sheds with a cement-sheet roof need checking before anyone breaks them up, so include a photo of the roof.
What affects the price
How overgrown the garden is
This is the main factor. It sets how long the work takes and how much waste there is. Brambles and saplings take far longer than long grass.
Mixed waste
If there is rubbish as well as garden waste, such as old furniture, bags of household waste or broken pots, expect about 20% more. Mixed waste has to be separated and costs more to dispose of.
Access
If everything has to go out through the house, or the garden is more than 20m from where the van can park, expect about 15% more. This is common with Birmingham terraces.
Minimum charge
Small jobs carry a minimum of about £150.
Things that need a survey
Abandoned gardens, and any garden with hazards such as needles, asbestos-type sheeting or signs of Japanese knotweed, are priced after a free look. So is anything where the estimate comes to more than £1,200.
Worked examples
- A moderately overgrown back garden at a Kings Heath terrace, all waste through the house: £380–£600 plus 15% is about £440–£690.
- A heavy clearance at an Erdington rental between tenants, with old furniture left behind: £650–£1,000 plus 20% for mixed waste is about £780–£1,200.
- A light tidy-up of a Solihull front and back garden before a house sale: about £220–£320.
- You have bagged everything yourself in Harborne and need half a van taken away: about £190.
- A medium shed removed plus a light clearance around it in Sutton Coldfield: about £220 plus £220–£320, so roughly £440–£540.
Garden clearance costs in the West Midlands
Birmingham's inner suburbs have many terraces with long, narrow gardens and no rear access, which is where the access uplift usually applies. Larger gardens in Sutton Coldfield, Solihull and the south of the city tend to produce more green waste per job. Probate clearances and rentals between tenants often involve mixed waste.
We do not quote a national average. Published national figures vary widely and often do not say whether waste disposal is included. The ranges on this page include it.
How to get a fixed price
- Fill in the quote form. You get an instant price range.
- Add photos of the whole garden from a couple of angles, plus the route out to the road.
- We pass your enquiry to one local specialist for your area, who confirms a fixed price with you directly.
A fixed price for the whole job is easier to compare than an hourly rate. You know what you will pay before anyone starts.
What to check before you pay
The cheapest price is often the one that ends up fly-tipped. If your waste is dumped and traced back to you, you can be fined. See fly-tipping and cheap garden clearance.
- Waste carrier registration. Anyone taking your waste away must be registered with the Environment Agency. Check the public register on GOV.UK and write down their registration number.
- Where the waste goes. Ask, and ask for a receipt that shows it.
- Insurance. Ask for a current public liability certificate.
- A written quote that says what is included, especially waste removal.
- No cash-only demands. A proper business gives receipts and accepts bank transfer.
If you are planning to do some of the work yourself first, our guide on how to clear an overgrown garden covers what to tackle and what to leave.
Questions
How much does garden clearance cost per hour?
Most clearance firms quote a fixed price for the job rather than an hourly rate, because the time depends on how overgrown the garden is and the biggest cost is often waste disposal. Hourly figures published online vary widely and often leave disposal out. A fixed price such as £380–£600 for a moderate clearance is the more useful number.
Is a skip cheaper than garden clearance?
Sometimes, if you do all the work. One UK guide (MyJobQuote, September 2026) gives a 2–3 yard mini skip at about £60–£130 and a 6 yard skip at about £120–£300 for a typical hire, plus a permit of about £10–£70 if it sits on the road. With a skip you do the cutting and loading yourself. A clearance includes the labour, loading and disposal.
How much does it cost to take away garden waste?
From about £80 for a car boot load to about £330 for a full van, including disposal at a licensed site.
How much does it cost to clear a very overgrown garden?
A heavily overgrown garden usually costs £650–£1,000. If it has been abandoned for years, or there is rubbish mixed in, a specialist will want to see it before giving a fixed price.
How much does shed removal cost?
About £150 for a small shed, £220 for medium and £300 for large, including taking it away.
Will they clear brambles and roots?
Brambles are cut back and the crowns dug out where possible. Say if you want roots removed so the price covers it. See bramble clearance.
Can they cut the hedge at the same time?
Yes. Hedge trimming is about £10 per metre with a minimum of about £150. See hedge trimming and the hedge removal cost guide.
