Walsall is the one patch on this site where the free brown bin changes the job. The council still collects garden waste at no charge, so fewer people pay a specialist to shift a bag of clippings, and more ring when the volume is well past what a fortnightly bin can take. The work here leans towards hedges, conifer screens and gardens left long enough to need a van.
The other thing to get right is the boundary, because WS1 to WS8 is not all Walsall. WS1, WS2 and WS4 are Walsall Council. WS3 is mostly Walsall with edges in Cannock Chase and South Staffordshire, WS5 has a Sandwell edge around Yew Tree, and WS8 has fringes in Lichfield District and Cannock Chase. But WS6, Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay, is entirely South Staffordshire District, and WS7, Burntwood and Chasetown, is entirely Lichfield District.
Branch and Bramble does not carry out the work. We pass your enquiry to one local specialist covering this patch, and your agreement is with them.
Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas
Walsall borough has 18 conservation areas (council list). The ones inside WS1 to WS8 are the Arboretum, covering part of the park and the housing around it and designated in 1985; Caldmore Green, Highgate, Church Hill, Lichfield Street, Bridge Street, Bradford Street and Walsall Locks in and around the town centre; Bloxwich High Street, Bloxwich Park and Elmore Green in WS3; and Old Rushall, Pelsall Common and Old Pelsall.
Walsall does not publish an interactive TPO map. It puts out a Register of Tree Preservation Orders as a PDF, updated quarterly, and says plainly that the register must not be treated as the definitive list of every TPO in the borough. Treat it as a first check, and for a definitive answer on one tree ring Development Management on 01922 652677. Do not assume a tree is unprotected because it is missing from the PDF.
Conservation area trees are protected automatically once the trunk is more than 75mm across at 1.5m above the ground, and you must give six weeks' written notice — a section 211 notice — before work, during which the council can make a TPO instead. See how to check if a tree has a TPO, trees in conservation areas and do I need permission to cut down a tree.
In WS7 the check is easier, because Lichfield District has an address-searchable protected tree map. WS6 addresses go to South Staffordshire District Council.
Garden waste and tips
Walsall's brown bin service is free. Collections are fortnightly, the 2026 season restarted on Monday 30 March, and the council extended the season from 30 weeks to 36, so collections run through November and into the beginning of December. Check your day on the collection checker, because days changed for many streets.
The tips changed this year. Merchants Way closed on 1 February 2026 and Middlemore Lane, Aldridge replaced it the next day; Fryers Road, Bloxwich, WS2 7LZ carries on as before. Both need proof that you live in Walsall, take no commercial waste, refuse pedestrians walking in with waste, and require vans and trailers to be booked with at least one clear working day's notice, capped at one visit a month, 2.5 tonnes gross and 6 metres in length (Walsall tips).
For the edges: WS7 pays Lichfield District £42.50 a bin for 2026, WS6 pays South Staffordshire £49 for 2026/27, and both use Staffordshire County Council tips. The Sandwell part of WS5 pays £40 for 2026, giving 20 collections.
The local landscape
Caldmore, Palfrey, Highgate, Chuckery and Pleck are the Victorian and Edwardian terrace streets: long, narrow gardens, high brick boundary walls, no rear access, everything carried through the house. The trees are mostly volunteers — sycamore, ash and buddleia that seeded into a corner and were left. Felling them is straightforward; getting the timber out is not.
Arboretum Road is the town-centre exception, its east side lined with large late 19th-century villas looking across the park, with deep gardens and mature trees to match. The park opened in 1874 and its trees belong to the council, so branches overhanging from it are a boundary question rather than a felling one — see cutting neighbours' overhanging branches.
Park Hall, Delves, Beechdale, Blakenall and much of Bloxwich are interwar and post-war semis and council estates on medium plots, where two things dominate: privet frontages cut for eighty years and now bare at the base, and 1970s Leylandii boundaries well over house height.
Rushall, Pelsall, Shelfield, Brownhills and Clayhanger sit on the old heath and coalfield edge, with larger plots, hedge boundaries rather than fences, and birch, oak and rowan self-seeding off the commons and the Chasewater side. Ash dieback is widespread on hedgerow ash here. Ground across the borough has been worked hard — the Arboretum is undulating because of historic lime workings — so stump grinding can meet made ground and buried rubble. Say so on the quote form if you know about it.
Tree work in Walsall
Hedges are the biggest single category. A 1970s Leylandii run along a Park Hall or Bloxwich boundary that is now 8 metres tall can be brought back as a hedge reduction, or taken out entirely as hedge removal at roughly £70 a metre with a £350 minimum. The Leylandii hedge removal guide covers what the roots leave behind.
Tree removal starts from £280. In the terrace streets the price is set by access rather than size: no side gate means rigging sections down and barrowing everything through the hall. In Pelsall, Rushall and Brownhills the trees are bigger, and the answer is more often a crown reduction from £220 or tree felling where dieback has made a boundary ash unsafe. Stump grinding from £120 finishes the job.
Check protection first: the register is not exhaustive and there is no map. The tree surgeon we pass your enquiry to has had their insurance and NPTC certificates checked — see do tree surgeons need to be qualified, tree surgery or the Walsall tree surgery page.
Garden clearance in Walsall
The free brown bin handles routine waste, so the clearances booked here are the ones a bin cannot touch: a garden left two or three seasons, a probate house, or the aftermath of taking a long hedge out. Clearances start from £220 with all waste removed. Common jobs:
- Overgrown garden clearance and bramble clearance at the far end of long terrace gardens in Caldmore, Palfrey and Pleck
- Shed removal from £150, including concrete-sectional garages on the Bloxwich and Beechdale estates
- Green waste removal from £80 when the brown bin would take months to catch up
- Hedge trimming at about £10 a metre on privet and hawthorn frontages
Neither tip takes commercial waste, and both cap vans at one booked visit a month, so a clearance specialist has to use a licensed transfer station as a registered waste carrier. If a quote comes in far below that cost, read fly-tipping and cheap garden clearance first — the duty of care over where your waste ends up stays with you. Doing it yourself, start with how to clear an overgrown garden; otherwise see the Walsall garden clearance page and all clearance services.
Local questions
I live in Great Wyrley or Burntwood. Is Walsall my council?
No. WS6 is South Staffordshire District Council and WS7 is Lichfield District Council, with Staffordshire County Council running the tips for both. That changes who you serve a tree notice on, what you pay for garden waste and which tip will let you in.
Do I have to pay for a brown bin in Walsall?
No. Garden waste collection is free and fortnightly. The 2026 season started on Monday 30 March and the council extended it from 30 to 36 weeks, so collections run into early December. Check your day on the council's website, because it changed for many streets in 2026.
Merchants Way has closed. Where do I take garden waste now?
Merchants Way closed on 1 February 2026 and Middlemore Lane in Aldridge opened in its place; Fryers Road in Bloxwich (WS2 7LZ) is unchanged. Take proof that you live in Walsall. Cars can drive in during opening hours, but a van or trailer must be booked one clear working day ahead and is limited to one visit a month, 2.5 tonnes and 6 metres.
How do I find out if my tree has a TPO when there is no map?
Start with the council's Register of Tree Preservation Orders, the quarterly PDF on its tree preservation page. The council warns the register is not definitive, so if your tree is mature or prominent, or near a conservation area boundary, confirm it with Development Management on 01922 652677 first. The responsibility for checking sits with the owner, not the contractor.
