Tree removal in Coventry is shaped by access and by which council you are under. In Earlsdon, Chapelfields and Stoke the gardens are long and narrow, and the wood often has to come out through the house or a shared alley. In the 1930s streets of Coundon, Radford and Cheylesmore it is usually a sycamore or a conifer screen that has outgrown the plot. Out in Balsall Common and Kenilworth it is more often an old hedgerow oak, and a different council's rules.
Branch and Bramble doesn't do the work. We pass your enquiry to one local tree surgeon who covers CV1 to CV8, and they confirm a fixed price with you directly.
What tree removal costs in Coventry
Prices are by height and include cutting up and taking away all the wood and brash.
| Tree height | Indicative price | Stump ground out at the same visit |
|---|---|---|
| Small (under 5m) | £280–£380 | add £70 |
| Medium (5–10m) | £480–£720 | add £100 |
| Large (10–15m) | £850–£1,400 | add £150 |
| Over 15m | Free survey | Priced on survey |
These are the ranges we use across the West Midlands. In Coventry, access moves the final figure more than anything else. A medium sycamore at the end of an Earlsdon garden with no side gate costs more than the same tree behind a Coundon semi with a wide gate. The tree removal cost guide has worked examples.
What pushes the price up here
- Carrying everything through. Where the only route is through the house or along a shared alley, or the tree is more than 20 metres from the van, expect around 15% on top.
- A cherry picker in the street. Most removals are done by a roped climber. If a platform has to stand on the road, Coventry requires a MEWP licence. It wants the application at least five working days ahead, with a site plan. The fee is £185 for up to a month, £240 for one to three months, or £380 if applied for after the event. The specialist arranges it and includes it in the price.
- Big old oaks. Coventry's tree strategy records 382 known English oaks with girths of 5 metres or more, many on the Arden fringe or in old hedgerows. Trees like that are always priced on survey.
- More than one tree. Two or three trees cost about 1.8 times the price of one.
- Keeping the logs. Having the timber left stacked for you takes about £75 off.
Which council to ask before a tree comes down
A CV postcode doesn't tell you which council's rules apply. Check your address before anything else.
Coventry City Council. Coventry has made over 500 Tree Preservation Orders, covering roughly 5,000 trees. They are shown on the council's online planning map. The council warns that the map leaves out replacement trees planted after an authorised removal, and that it isn't formal confirmation. If the answer matters, email the tree preservation officer at treesplanning@coventry.gov.uk. New Orders keep appearing. In 2026 the council made provisional Orders at Stoke Heath, Stoney Stanton Road and Watery Lane. An Order protects a tree from the day it is made, before it is confirmed.
Conservation areas. Coventry's own page says anyone planning to cut down a tree over a certain size in a conservation area must give six weeks' notice, TPO or not. It asks for tree enquiries to go to both the conservation team and the trees team. Two areas are recent. Earlsdon and Brownshill Green were approved in September 2022 and came into force on 21 November 2022. If you moved in before then, it is easy to miss.
Refusals. Coventry does refuse some applications to fell protected trees, and the Planning Inspectorate has backed it on appeal. The decisions listed on its page, from Canley and Cannon Park to a CV5 case in May 2025, were all dismissed.
Outside the city. Balsall Common, Berkswell and Meriden are Solihull. Berkswell, Meriden Green and Meriden Hill are Solihull conservation areas, and Solihull has its own TPO search. Kenilworth and Burton Green are Warwick District. Its interactive map shows TPOs if you switch the layers on, and its planning team on 01926 456557 can tell you whether a tree is protected.
Paddocks, the tip and choosing a firm
Paddock and field trees. Garden trees are exempt from Forestry Commission felling licences. Trees in a paddock or field are not. A licence is needed to fell more than 5 cubic metres in a calendar quarter. One large oak on a Balsall Common or Kenilworth plot can pass that, so ask before you book.
The wood. Coventry's tip on Bar Road, off London Road, accepts wood and garden waste from Coventry residents, by booking only. If the waste isn't from your address, the council says you must bring the person it belongs to. Your tree surgeon removes the waste as a registered waste carrier. If you keep the logs, they stay with you.
Choosing a firm. Coventry's own advice on choosing an arborist says chainsaw users must hold NPTC certificates. It suggests asking for public liability insurance of at least £5 million and work to BS 3998, and rejecting anyone who won't put a quote in writing.
What the job involves
- Checks. The specialist confirms which council covers your address, whether the tree is protected, and looks for nesting birds and bats.
- Dismantling. A roped climber takes off the side branches, then lowers the stem in sections. In Earlsdon and Chapelfields, sheets go down through the house before anything is carried.
- The waste. Brash is chipped and the timber logged. It leaves with the crew unless you keep the logs.
- The stump. If you ask, it is ground out at the same visit, which is cheaper than booking stump grinding later.
Coventry's tree strategy says ash is the city's most common tree, and ash dieback has been identified here. A dying ash can become brittle, so it is safer dealt with early. See our ash dieback guide. A healthy tree that is simply too big may only need a crown reduction.
What to photograph for a quote
Good photos usually mean a fixed price without a visit. More photo tips.
- The whole thing, with your house or fence in shot for scale
- The base or ground level and what’s around it: walls, sheds, beds
- The route in from the road: side gate, steps, the path through
Questions about tree removal in Coventry
Does a cherry picker on my Earlsdon street need a Coventry licence?
Yes. Anyone operating a MEWP or cherry picker on the highway in Coventry needs a licence. Apply at least five working days ahead with a site plan. It costs £185 for up to a month. Most back-garden removals use a climber instead, so ask if your job needs one at all.
Is Brownshill Green a conservation area for tree work?
Yes, since 21 November 2022. Coventry approved Brownshill Green and Earlsdon as new conservation areas that September. Felling a tree over the size threshold there now needs six weeks' notice to the council, even with no TPO on it.
Can I take my felled tree to the London Road tip?
If you live in Coventry, yes. The tip on Bar Road accepts wood and garden waste by booking only, and you need proof of address. A tree surgeon can't take your waste in for you. If the waste isn't from your own address, the council says the owner must come along.
What happens if Coventry refuses consent to fell a protected tree?
You can appeal to the Planning Inspectorate. Coventry lists appeal decisions on its TPO page. The recent ones, including cases in Canley, Cannon Park and CV5, were all dismissed. A strong case usually needs evidence such as an arborist's report.
