Walsall has more old trees than its industrial reputation suggests. In 2023 the council reported that Walsall Arboretum holds the highest concentration of ancient and veteran trees anywhere in Birmingham and the Black Country, with a lime and a crack willow each 7.35 metres round and ash pollards that may be 300 years old. Gardens on the bigger plots in Rushall and Pelsall have their own oak, birch and rowan, and the terraces have sycamores that seeded in and were never stopped. When a tree like that is healthy but too big for its garden, a crown reduction is usually the answer.
Branch and Bramble doesn't do the work. We pass your enquiry to one local tree surgeon who covers WS1 to WS8, and they confirm a fixed price with you directly.
What crown reduction costs in Walsall
| Tree size | Crown reduction | Pruning, crown lift, thin or deadwood |
|---|---|---|
| Small (under 5m) | £220–£300 | £180–£280 |
| Medium (5–10m) | £320–£480 | £280–£400 |
| Large (10–15m) | £480–£750 | £400–£600 |
| Over 15m | Free survey | Free survey |
Prices include chipping and taking away the cuttings. Most Walsall pruning jobs fall in the medium band: a sycamore lifted clear of a Bloxwich drive, or a birch thinned to get light into a Pelsall back garden. A large lime in a conservation area is more likely £480 to £750, once the notice period has run. The crown reduction cost guide has worked examples.
What pushes the price up here
- Branches over a roof or conservatory. Anything overhanging a building is priced after a free visit, because each cut piece has to be lowered on a rope.
- Over the pavement or road. A tree leaning over the highway is a survey job too.
- Access. If the cuttings have to go out through a terrace house, or the tree is more than 20 metres from the van, expect around 15% more.
- Several trees at once. Two or three trees cost about 1.8 times the price of one, and four or more about 2.5 times.
- Keeping the chippings. Leaving them for your borders takes about £75 off.
Pruning in a Walsall conservation area
The six-week rule isn't only for felling. Walsall's conservation areas page says you must give six weeks' notice before you fell or do other work on a conservation-area tree. That covers a reduction, a crown lift, a thin or deadwood removal. Of the borough's 18 conservation areas, the ones with the most garden trees are the Arboretum, Bloxwich Park, Pelsall Common, Old Pelsall and Old Rushall.
The same application form covers TPO trees and conservation-area trees. Describe the work precisely: how much height and spread comes off, and which limbs. The neighbours get 21 days to comment, then a tree officer visits. The council has six weeks to decide a conservation-area notice and eight weeks for a TPO tree. It can also grant part of what you asked for and refuse the rest, for example a lighter reduction than the one requested. The decision can set conditions on when the work is done and by whom.
Council trees that overhang your garden
A lot of pruning requests in Walsall are about trees the homeowner doesn't own: a street tree on the verge, or a park tree over the back fence. Walsall looks after trees on council land and sets out when it will and won't prune.
It won't normally prune a council tree to reduce falling leaves, seeds or fruit, to deal with honeydew, or to control nuisance from wildlife. For loss of daylight it has a measured test. The nearest window of a habitable room has to be less than 6 metres from a tree over 12 metres tall, or less than half the tree's height from a smaller one. The edge of the canopy also has to be within 2 metres of a vertical line drawn up from that window. Even then it may say no if the work would have a significant impact on the wider community.
If the council can't justify work, you may be able to pay for it yourself through one of its approved contractors, using a tree works permit. Contact the Clean and Green team on 01922 653344 first.
It works the other way too. Walsall takes reports of garden trees whose low branches affect roads, pavements or public spaces, or block road signs and street lights. A crown lift over the footway is cheaper done before a neighbour reports it.
Nesting birds. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act it's an offence to damage or destroy an active wild bird's nest, so the specialist checks before any pruning in spring and summer. Heavy reductions are often easier to plan for autumn and winter.
What the job involves
- Agreeing the target. You and the specialist agree how much height and spread to lose, and the notice or application goes in if the tree is protected.
- Climbing in. A climber sets a rope high in the crown and works out along each limb.
- Cutting to growth points. Each branch is shortened back to a side branch that can take over as the new tip, following BS 3998. Walsall won't approve topping on a protected tree, and a reduction done properly avoids it anyway.
- Clearing up. Cut material is lowered, chipped and taken away, unless you keep the chip.
If the tree really has to go, see tree removal. For limes and willows that have been cut back to the same points before, pollarding may suit better.
Questions about crown reduction and tree pruning in Walsall
Do I have to give Walsall six weeks' notice just to crown lift a tree in the Arboretum conservation area?
Yes. Walsall's six-week notice applies to felling or any other work on a conservation-area tree, and a crown lift counts. It covers trees with a trunk over 75mm across at 1.5m above the ground. Use the council's protected tree form, and plan the work for after the six weeks.
Will Walsall Council prune a council tree that blocks light to my house?
Only if it meets the council's daylight test. The nearest habitable room window has to be under 6 metres from a tree taller than 12 metres, or under half the height of a smaller one, and the canopy edge within 2 metres of the window line. Leaves, seeds and honeydew are not reasons it accepts.
Can I pay to have a Walsall Council tree pruned myself?
Sometimes. Where the council can't justify the work on a tree on its land, it says you may be able to arrange and pay for it through one of its approved contractors with a tree works permit. Ask the Clean and Green team before anyone touches the tree.
What happens if Walsall only partly approves my crown reduction?
The council can refuse part of an application and grant other works, such as a lighter reduction or a crown thin instead. The decision notice says exactly what is allowed and any conditions. You can appeal to the Secretary of State within 28 days.
