Most stumps ground out in Walsall are the leftovers of two kinds of job. One is a row of conifers or Leylandii taken off a semi boundary in Park Hall, Delves or Bloxwich. The other is a self-sown sycamore or ash cut down at the far end of a long terrace garden in Caldmore, Palfrey or Pleck. The grinding itself is quick. The planning goes into getting the machine to the stump and deciding what happens to the heap of chip afterwards.
Branch and Bramble doesn't do the work. We pass your enquiry to one local stump specialist who covers WS1 to WS8, and they confirm a fixed price with you directly.
What stump grinding costs in Walsall
Prices are by the width of the stump measured across the cut surface.
| Stump width | Indicative price |
|---|---|
| Under 30cm | £120–£180 |
| 30–60cm | £180–£280 |
| Over 60cm | £280–£400 |
A single small stump usually comes out at £150–£180, because of the £150 minimum charge. Boundary rows are where Walsall prices drop per stump: three 40cm Leylandii stumps along a Bloxwich fence come to about 1.8 times the single price, roughly £324–£504, not three times. Wide oak or birch stumps on the larger plots in Pelsall and Rushall sit in the top band. The stump grinding cost guide has more worked examples.
What pushes the price up here
- No side gate. Compact grinders fit through a standard side gate, but many Walsall terraces have no rear entry at all. If the machine has to go through the house, or the stump is more than 20 metres from the van, expect around 15% more. Steps without a ramp need mentioning too.
- Parking. In streets with yellow lines or permit bays near the town centre, the specialist may need a Walsall parking dispensation for the van and grinder. It costs £15 per vehicle per day, booked at least three working days ahead.
- What's in the ground. Buried brick, stone or old metal fence posts around a stump wear the grinder's teeth and slow the job. If you know they're there, say so.
- Several stumps. Two or three cost about 1.8 times one, four or more about 2.5 times.
- Keeping the chip. Leaving the grindings on site as mulch or backfill takes about £75 off.
The chip, the brown bin and Walsall's tips
Grinding a stump produces more chip and soil than people expect. If the specialist takes it, it goes with them as a registered waste carrier, because neither Walsall tip accepts business or commercial waste.
If you keep it and later want rid of the surplus, Fryers Road in Bloxwich (WS2 7LZ) accepts garden waste and also soil and rubble. Middlemore Lane in Aldridge takes garden waste on its upper level. Both want proof that you live in Walsall. Cars can drive in during opening hours, but a van or trailer has to be booked ahead, with no same-day bookings and one van visit a month across both sites. Opening hours differ by site: Middlemore Lane opens 8am to 4pm on Tuesdays and 10am to 6pm on Thursdays, and Fryers Road is the other way round, with 9am to 5pm on the other days at both.
The free brown bin is meant for loose garden waste such as hedge and tree clippings and leaves. Collections run fortnightly through the season, so a large heap of grindings is usually better dug into a border or used under a new lawn.
Pipes, drains and stumps the council left
Buried services. The grinder usually works 15 to 30cm down. Before the day, find what you can: the line of the drain from the back door, any outside lights, a gas meter box or a water stopcock near the stump. Walsall Council's own view on roots and drains is that a watertight drain shouldn't let roots in, which is why it won't normally do work to council trees said to be blocking drains. A cracked pipe near your stump is worth a drain survey either way.
Replanting conditions. If the stump is from a protected tree felled with Walsall's consent, check the decision notice before grinding. Walsall says its decisions can include conditions on replacement planting, and a new tree in the same spot needs a deeper grind. If a protected tree was felled without permission, the council says you will normally have to plant a replacement.
Verge stumps. A stump on the grass verge or pavement outside your house is the council's, not yours to grind. Walsall manages trees on council land and takes reports of damaged, fallen or dangerous ones through its Clean and Green team. If roots from a council tree have damaged your property, it will consider individual cases of direct root damage or subsidence with supporting evidence.
What the job involves
- Route and services. The specialist checks the narrowest point between the road and the stump and asks what's buried nearby.
- Cutting low. A tall stump is chainsawed close to the ground first, and screens go up to protect windows, cars and the neighbour's fence.
- Grinding. The wheel is swept across the stump in passes, working below the surface and out along the main roots.
- Backfill. The hole is filled with chip and soil, raked level, and the surplus bagged and taken away or left for you.
If the tree is still standing, having it taken down with the stump ground at the same visit is cheaper. Where you're building on the spot, full stump removal may be needed instead.
What to photograph for a quote
Good photos usually mean a fixed price without a visit. More photo tips.
- The whole thing, with your house or fence in shot for scale
- The base or ground level and what’s around it: walls, sheds, beds
- The route in from the road: side gate, steps, the path through
Questions about stump grinding in Walsall
Can a stump grinder get into a Caldmore or Palfrey terrace with no side gate?
Usually, yes. Compact grinders are built for garden access and can be walked through a house on boards, but it adds around 15% to the price. Measure the narrowest door or passage on the route and send a photo of it with your enquiry.
Can I take stump grindings to Middlemore Lane tip myself?
Yes, as household garden waste, which goes on the upper level. Bring proof that you live in Walsall. A car can turn up during opening hours. A van or trailer must be booked in advance, not on the same day, and is limited to one visit a month across Middlemore Lane and Fryers Road.
There's an old council tree stump on the verge outside my Walsall house. Can I have it ground out?
No. Street trees on the verge are managed by the council, so don't book a private grinder for one. Report it to Walsall Council's Clean and Green team on 01922 653344 or CleanAndGreen@walsall.gov.uk.
Walsall Council made replacement planting a condition of my felling consent. Can the stump still be ground?
Usually, but read the condition first. It may say where the new tree goes and when. If it goes in the same spot, ask the specialist for a deeper grind and to take more of the chip away, so there is clean soil to plant into.
