Where’s the job?

The stumps people want gone in Wolverhampton tend to match the housing. In Penn, Finchfield and Merridale it's usually a row of conifer stumps where a 1970s screen came out of a semi boundary. In the terraces of Blakenhall, Graiseley and Whitmore Reans it's a sycamore cut down at the end of a narrow garden, with the grinder having to come through the house. On the Tettenhall ridge the stumps are fewer but wider: beech and oak, the trees that dominate the ridge's old woodland.

Branch and Bramble doesn't do the work. We pass your enquiry to one local stump specialist who covers WV1 to WV6 and WV8 to WV11, and they confirm a fixed price with you directly.

What stump grinding costs in Wolverhampton

Prices are by the width of the stump measured across the cut surface.

Stump widthIndicative price
Under 30cm£120–£180
30–60cm£180–£280
Over 60cm£280–£400

A single small stump usually costs £150–£180 because of the £150 minimum charge. Rows are much cheaper per stump: four or more conifer stumps along a Penn boundary come to about 2.5 times the single price, not four or five times. A beech stump over 60cm in a Tettenhall Wood garden sits in the top band, and more if the grinder has to go down steps. The stump grinding cost guide has worked examples.

What pushes the price up here

  • Terraces with no side access. The Fellows Street conservation area in Blakenhall is a preserved terrace of early 20th-century houses, and in streets like these the grinder often has to come through the house. That adds around 15%, as does a stump more than 20 metres from the van.
  • Slopes and steps. On the steep ground around Wightwick Bank and Tinacre Hill, say if there are steps without a ramp, and include a photo of the route.
  • Wide hardwood stumps. Beech and oak take longer to grind than conifers, and buttress roots flaring out at the surface add time.
  • Several stumps. Two or three cost about 1.8 times one, four or more about 2.5 times.
  • Keeping the chip. Leaving the grindings to backfill the hole or mulch a border takes about £75 off.

Drains and buried services

Grinding usually goes 15 to 30cm down. Before the day, tell the specialist where any drains, garden-light cables and outside-tap pipes run, and point out manholes near the stump.

If you think roots from the old tree have got into a drain, Wolverhampton Council's view is useful. It says roots don't break drains by lifting or squeezing them. They exploit a drain that's already leaking and then block it. The council won't work on its own trees to keep roots out of damaged pipes, because repairing the pipe is the only certain fix. It expects a drain inspection and camera survey first, at the owner's expense, usually through house insurance. Grinding the stump won't fix a cracked drain, and the remaining roots will rot down slowly.

Council stumps, ash and replanting

Stumps on the verge. When the council fells one of its trees, it leaves the stump at waist height so people can see it. It then removes the stump later as part of its own stump grinding programme and, where possible, plants a new tree the following winter. Don't book a private grinder for a council stump: only authorised people may work on council trees. If one has been left for more than 12 months, report it to the council's tree team.

Ash. The council's 2023 planting strategy names ash dieback among the most serious threats to the city's trees, and it plans to plant a wide range of species to replace the ash it expects to lose. If an ash in your own garden has come down, it's a good moment to choose something different for the spot.

Council tenants. Wolverhampton Homes tells tenants not to plant trees or large shrubs within 10 metres of their home. If you rent a council house, that limits where a replacement can go once the stump is ground.

The chip. The purple garden waste bin, £55 for 2026, takes woody waste up to six inches across but not soil, and a bin too heavy to move won't be emptied. Stump grindings are mostly chip mixed with soil, so a big heap is better used in the garden. Anchor Lane in Lanesfield and Shaw Road in Bushbury both accept garden waste and soil from your own home, 8am to 4pm every day, with photo ID showing a Wolverhampton address.

What the job involves

  1. Route and services. The specialist checks the narrowest gap between the road and the stump and asks where the drains and cables run.
  2. Cutting low. A tall stump is chainsawed close to the ground, and screens go up to protect windows, cars and fences.
  3. Grinding. The wheel is swept across the stump in passes, working below the surface and out along the main surface roots.
  4. Backfill. The hole is filled with chip and soil and raked level. The surplus is bagged and taken away, or left for you.

If the tree is still standing, tree removal with the stump ground at the same visit is cheaper. If you're building over the spot, full stump removal may be needed instead.

What to photograph for a quote

Good photos usually mean a fixed price without a visit. More photo tips.

  1. The whole thing, with your house or fence in shot for scale
  2. The base or ground level and what’s around it: walls, sheds, beds
  3. The route in from the road: side gate, steps, the path through

Questions about stump grinding in Wolverhampton

Will Wolverhampton Council grind out the stump it left on my verge?

Yes, eventually. The council leaves felled tree stumps at waist height so they're visible, then grinds them out later as part of its stump grinding programme. Where it can, it plants a replacement the following winter. If a council stump has been there more than 12 months, report it.

I'm a Wolverhampton Homes tenant. Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?

Only if the spot is far enough from the house. Wolverhampton Homes says tenants shouldn't plant trees or large shrubs within 10 metres of their home. Ask Wolverhampton Homes before the old tree is taken out, because cutting down a tree also needs its consent.

Can stump grindings go in Wolverhampton's purple garden waste bin?

Some can. The purple bin takes woody garden waste up to six inches across, loose in the bin, but not soil, and staff won't empty a bin too heavy to move. Grindings mixed with soil are better kept for the garden or taken to Anchor Lane or Shaw Road.

Roots from the old tree are in my drain in Wolverhampton. Will grinding the stump fix it?

No. Wolverhampton Council says roots exploit drains that are already leaking rather than breaking sound ones, and that repairing the pipe is the only certain solution. Get a drain inspection and camera survey, usually through your house insurance, as well as grinding the stump.
