The DY postcodes run downhill from the limestone ridge at Dudley and Sedgley to the Stour valley at Stourbridge, and the gardens change as you go. Dudley, Netherton and Brierley Hill are terraces and post-war estates reached through an entry; Kingswinford, Wordsley and Wall Heath are interwar semis with long rear plots; Stourbridge, Oldswinford, Norton and Pedmore have Victorian villas with the original planting still in them, much of it now over 20 metres tall.
The councils change too, and not where people expect. DY1, DY2 and DY5 are entirely Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council, and DY6 is almost all Dudley. DY3 is Dudley for Sedgley and Gornal, South Staffordshire for Himley and part of Wombourne. DY4 Tipton is split with Sandwell, and DY7 is mostly South Staffordshire: Kinver and Stourton. DY8 is Dudley for Stourbridge, Wollaston, Norton and Amblecote, with edges in South Staffordshire and Bromsgrove. DY9 is Dudley for Lye, Wollescote and Pedmore, and Bromsgrove district, Worcestershire, for Hagley, Clent and Belbroughton.

Garden waste and tips
Dudley. Garden waste costs £52 a bin for 2026/27, frozen at the 2025/26 price, running 50 weeks from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, fortnightly, with a two-week pause over Christmas. Subscribe through MyDudley or Dudley Council Plus on 0300 555 2345.
The borough has one tip: the Household Waste Recycling Centre, Birmingham Street, Stourbridge, DY8 1JE, off the ring road along the A458. Every visit needs a booked slot and staff turn away anyone without one. Summer hours are 8am to 4pm, Mondays to 6pm; winter closes at 4pm. Vans and trailers need a council permit, trailers capped at 1.8m. One site for the whole borough is why weekend slots go quickly.
For the edges: Tipton on the Sandwell side uses Shidas Lane, Oldbury — booking only, Sandwell residents with ID, vans and trailers one booking every four weeks. Kinver and Himley are South Staffordshire: garden waste £49 for 2026/27 (29 June 2026 to 30 June 2027), Staffordshire County Council tips, Wombourne closest. Hagley, Clent and Belbroughton are Bromsgrove: £60 a bin for 2026 plus a £22 set-up fee for new customers, and Worcestershire tips.
The local landscape
Dudley, Sedgley, Gornal and Netherton sit on the Silurian limestone ridge quarried and mined through the Industrial Revolution. Wren's Nest was worked by pillar-and-stall mining and the roof of the Seven Sisters caverns collapsed as recently as 2001, so old workings are worth flagging before anything involving digging or a heavy machine. Gardens here are small and walled, often reached only by a shared entry, so every branch comes out by hand.
Stourbridge, Oldswinford, Wollaston, Norton and Pedmore are the big-garden end, where the villas came with limes, horse chestnuts, beech, yew and the occasional cedar, planted in the 1880s and now above the roofline. The recurring problems are lime with heavy epicormic growth and honeydew dripping onto parked cars, horse chestnut with leaf miner and bleeding canker, and badly topped beech.
Kingswinford, Wall Heath and Wordsley run to 20 or 30 metre rear gardens with a great many 1970s Leylandii and laurel screens, now past useful. Lye, Quarry Bank and Brierley Hill back onto former works sites, canal arms and railway land, where sycamore, birch, buddleia and bramble seed fast into made ground, and ash dieback shows along the canal banks.
Garden clearance in Dudley & Stourbridge
A £52 green bin is fine for weekly cuttings and useless for a backlog. One bin a fortnight will not clear a Lye garden gone to bramble and sycamore, or a Pedmore plot with three seasons of leaf litter and a collapsed greenhouse. Clearances start from £220 with everything taken away, green waste removal from £80.
Typical work here:
- Overgrown garden clearance and bramble clearance on plots backing onto old industrial land in Lye, Quarry Bank and Brierley Hill.
- Shed removal and greenhouse clearance from £150 in the long Kingswinford and Wordsley gardens.
- Hedge trimming at about £10 a metre on the privet and laurel frontages in Oldswinford and Wollaston, after checking for nesting birds: see our nesting season guide.
Birmingham Street takes no business waste, so a clearance specialist disposes at a licensed facility as a registered waste carrier. That cost is in the price, which is why a cheap cash offer to "get rid of it" deserves a second look — see fly-tipping and cheap clearance.

Local questions
I have a DY9 postcode in Hagley. Is my council Dudley?
No. Hagley, Clent, Belbroughton and Romsley are in Bromsgrove district, Worcestershire, even though the postcode looks like Stourbridge. That means Bromsgrove's £60 garden waste scheme, Worcestershire tips rather than Birmingham Street, and Bromsgrove for TPO questions. Lye, Wollescote and Pedmore in DY9 are Dudley.
Are the big trees in Pedmore and Norton protected?
Not automatically. Neither is in a conservation area, so the six-week notice does not apply by default. Plenty of individual trees and groups still carry Tree Preservation Orders, which need an application decided within eight weeks. Check Dudley's map under Development Control, then confirm with the tree officer.
My garden is over old limestone or coal workings. Does that affect stump grinding?
It can. The ridge from Sedgley through Dudley to Netherton was mined heavily, with recorded collapses including Wren's Nest in 2001. A grinder only works the top 200–300mm, so it is usually the smaller concern, but tell the specialist if you know of shafts or a mining report. Stump removal by excavation is another matter; grinding starts from £120.
