Where’s the job?

Garden clearance in Lichfield & Tamworth

Two towns eight miles apart with almost nothing in common as garden jobs. Lichfield is a small Georgian cathedral city with a tight historic core, walled town gardens and a ring of 1980s to 2000s estates. Tamworth nearly doubled in size between 1961 and 2001 as Birmingham's most successful overspill town, and most of its housing is 1960s and 1970s estates with modest plots and trees planted all at once when the estates went up. Those trees are fifty years old now, which is why the work here is mostly reduction and removal.

The council map is untidy. WS13 and WS14 are Lichfield District Council. B77 is Tamworth Borough with a North Warwickshire edge, and B79 is mostly Tamworth Borough with parts in Lichfield District, North Warwickshire and North West Leicestershire. B78 is the awkward one: Fazeley, Bonehill, Hopwas and Drayton Bassett are Lichfield District, while Dordon, Piccadilly and Wood End are North Warwickshire.

Branch and Bramble does not do the work. We pass your enquiry to one local specialist covering this patch, and they agree a fixed price with you.

Garden waste and tips

Lichfield District and Tamworth Borough run a joint waste service, hosted by Lichfield, so garden waste works the same way on both sides. Sign-ups for 2026 have closed. The 2027 service costs £43.50 a bin, gives up to 23 fortnightly collections with a break over Christmas and New Year, and opens for sign-ups at the end of November. Sign up on the Lichfield or Tamworth garden waste page, or on 0345 002 0022.

Tips are Staffordshire County Council's. The one inside the patch is Lichfield Recycling Centre, Witley Drive, Trent Valley Road, WS13 6EU, which is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Cars need no booking; a van, pick-up or trailer over 1.5 metres needs a free permit allowing 12 visits a year (Staffordshire recycling centres).

Tamworth has no tip of its own. Lichfield is the nearest Staffordshire site, and the borough points east-side residents to Lower House Farm, Lower House Lane, Baddesley Ensor, Atherstone, CV9 2QA. Lichfield takes trade waste only from Staffordshire businesses that show a waste carrier licence, and traders' garden waste goes through Staffordshire's chargeable small traders scheme. That disposal cost is part of what you pay for a clearance.

The local landscape

Lichfield city centre is hard to get equipment into: Georgian and Victorian houses with walled rear gardens and narrow shared entries, where the big trees — the limes and planes around Minster Pool, Stowe Pool and Beacon Park — belong to the council, not the householders looking at them. Work here is usually one sycamore or ash that has outgrown a 10 metre plot. Streethay, Boley Park and Darwin Park are 1980s to 2000s estates with smaller gardens: birch, rowan, cherry and a great deal of Leylandii along fence lines, put in at a metre and left. The WS14 villages — Whittington, Shenstone, Wall and Hopwas — have larger plots, old field boundaries running through gardens, and hedgerow oak and ash showing dieback.

Tamworth splits again. Bolehall, Glascote and the streets near the castle grounds have Victorian and interwar houses with long narrow gardens, and along the Tame and Anker the ground is wet enough for willow and alder. Stonydelph, Belgrave, Leyfields and Wilnecote are the overspill estates: medium gardens, open-plan fronts, and a generation of birch, cherry, whitebeam and conifer from the 1960s and 1970s now past its useful size. Amington Hall Estate and Amington Green are the exception, with much bigger trees.

Much of the land between the two towns sits on Mercia Mudstone, often under glacial sand and gravel, and mudstone soils shrink and swell with the weather. If a surveyor has linked a tree to movement, share the report before anything is cut.

Garden clearance in Lichfield & Tamworth

Clearances start from £220 with the waste taken away, and two patterns drive most enquiries.

The first is probate and rental turnover on the Tamworth estates, where a garden has been left a few seasons and the back third has gone to bramble and self-sown sycamore. That is overgrown garden clearance and bramble clearance, usually with an old shed or concrete-panel garage to come out too (shed removal from £150).

The second is volume. A brown bin holds a fortnight of normal garden waste, not a hedge cut, so green waste removal from £80 is a common follow-on, as is hedge trimming at about £10 a metre on the long estate boundaries in Wilnecote and Stonydelph. A specialist can't tip your waste for free as a household: they pay to dispose of it as a registered waste carrier, through Staffordshire's small traders scheme or a licensed transfer station. That cost is real, which is why very cheap cash offers are worth questioning — read fly-tipping and cheap garden clearance first.

Local questions

My post town is Tamworth but I have a B78 postcode. Which council do I deal with?

It depends on the village. Fazeley, Bonehill, Hopwas and Drayton Bassett are Lichfield District, some B78 addresses are Tamworth Borough, and Dordon, Piccadilly and Wood End are North Warwickshire — a different planning authority for tree notices, and Warwickshire tips rather than Staffordshire ones. Your council tax bill settles it.

Is the whole of Lichfield a conservation area?

No. The city conservation area covers the historic core, the Cathedral Close and the streets around Minster Pool and Stowe Pool, but not the outer estates. Whittington, Shenstone, Wall and Hopwas have separate conservation areas. Searching your address on the ezyPortal map is the quickest check, since it shows conservation areas and TPOs together.

Where is the nearest tip to Tamworth, and do I pay for a brown bin?

There is no tip in the borough. Lichfield Recycling Centre on Trent Valley Road, WS13 6EU, is the nearest Staffordshire site and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays; for the east side of town, Lower House Farm at Baddesley Ensor, CV9 2QA, is usually closer. Cars go in without booking, but vans and larger trailers need a free permit capped at 12 visits a year. Garden waste collection is a paid subscription on both sides of the patch. 2026 sign-ups have closed, and the 2027 service costs £43.50 a bin.
