Nearest tip to me: household recycling centres across the West Midlands

Addresses and booking rules for the recycling centres across the West Midlands, plus van permits, proof of address, what is charged for, and when one collection beats six trips.

Updated 23 September 2026

Your nearest tip depends on which council you pay council tax to, because almost every site in the West Midlands is for that borough's residents only, and most now require a booking. Birmingham has five sites, Wolverhampton and Walsall two each, and Solihull, Sandwell, Dudley and Coventry one each; Lichfield residents use Staffordshire County Council's sites at Lichfield and Burntwood. Below are the addresses and booking rules as published on each council's own pages, checked on 22 September 2026. Opening hours and permit schemes change often, so follow the link before you load the car.

Birmingham

You normally need to book a 15-minute slot and bring proof of a Birmingham address: a driving licence, utility bill or council tax bill. Car and van bookings are separate systems.

SiteAddressBooking
Castle BromwichTameside Drive, B35 7AGCars: booking temporarily switched off. Vans: yes
Kings NortonLifford Lane, B30 3JJYes. Site being redeveloped, fewer slots
Perry BarrHolford Drive, B42 2TUYes
Sutton ColdfieldNorris Way, B75 7BBYes
TyseleyJames Road, B11 2BAYes

Vans can be booked up to seven days ahead, cars up to six: see the booking page. Birmingham's garden waste collection is currently suspended, which is pushing more green waste through these sites: see our Birmingham garden waste guide.

Solihull

SiteAddressBooking
Bickenhill HWRCCoventry Road, Solihull, B92 0DYYes, mandatory 15-minute slots

Slots are released on a rolling three-week basis, and access is affected by HS2 works. Bring proof you live in Solihull, such as a utility bill. See the council's Bickenhill HWRC page.

Sandwell

SiteAddressBooking
Household Recycling CentreShidas Lane, OldburyYes, pre-booked appointment only

Sandwell residents only, and the council says you will not be able to book without a Sandwell postcode. Bring ID for the property the waste came from plus your booking reference, or you will be turned away. See Sandwell's recycling centre page.

Walsall

SiteAddressBooking
Fryers Road HWRCBloxwich, WS2 7LZCars: no. Vans and trailers: yes
Middlemore Lane HWRCAldridgeCars: no. Vans and trailers: yes

Middlemore Lane opened in February 2026 and replaced the old Merchants Way site in Aldridge, which is now permanently closed. Cars do not need to book, though you must be a Walsall resident and carry a photocard licence, council tax letter or recent utility bill (council page). Walsall's brown bin garden waste collection is free, so for garden waste alone the bin is usually the better option.

Dudley

SiteAddressBooking
Household Waste Recycling CentreBirmingham Street, Stourbridge, DY8 1JEYes, no admission without an appointment

Bookable up to 14 days ahead, Dudley residents only. Vehicles over 6ft 6in high are Wednesday only. See Dudley's recycling centre page. For a bigger clear-out with the waste taken away, see garden clearance in Dudley and Stourbridge.

Wolverhampton

SiteAddressBooking
Anchor LaneLanesfield, Bilston, WV14 9NECars: no. Vans, larger vehicles, trailers: yes
Shaw RoadWolverhampton, WV10 9LECars: no. Vans, larger vehicles, trailers: yes

Cars can turn up, which is unusual in the region now. You need one form of current photo ID to prove you are a Wolverhampton resident; van and trailer users need two, one photographic plus a recent household bill. DIY waste is capped at four visits in any four-week period. See Wolverhampton's tips page.

Coventry

SiteAddressBooking
Household Recycling and Disposal CentreBar Road, off London Road, Coventry, CV3 4ANYes, booking only

Coventry residents only, and the council says visitors arriving without a pre-booking will not be permitted access. Bring a recent utility bill, council tax bill or driving licence; the council states the site is free to use for Coventry residents. Cars, small vans up to 1.9m high, transit vans up to 5.25m long, pick-ups, campervans and some 4x4s are allowed; anything over 3.5 tonnes or 2.05m high, long-wheelbase, twin-axle, or towing a trailer is not. Hire vans are accepted (council page).

Lichfield and Burntwood

Lichfield District Council does not run recycling centres. Staffordshire County Council does.

SiteAddressBooking
Lichfield Recycling CentreWitley Drive, Trent Valley Road, Lichfield, WS13 6EUNot stated for cars
Burntwood Recycling CentreRing Road, Chase Terrace, Burntwood, WS7 3JQNot stated for cars

Car visits are not capped. Staffordshire is the only council here that visibly charges householders for some waste: see the charges section below and its recycling centres page.

Asbestos

Rules differ completely between boroughs. Never break asbestos up and never put it in a normal skip: read asbestos in old sheds first.

CouncilPosition
BirminghamNot accepted at any site. Free home collection for asbestos cement instead
SolihullNot accepted at Bickenhill. Permit scheme sends residents to Coventry, one a month
SandwellAccepted at Shidas Lane with an on-site permit, using the council's red and clear bags, in two short daily windows
WalsallAccepted at Fryers Road only, permit issued to the resident of the address it came from
DudleyNot accepted
WolverhamptonNot accepted
CoventryAccepted. Double-bagged, kept damp, no piece over 2m by 1m, up to six sacks a month
StaffordshireNot accepted at Lichfield or Burntwood. Cannock is the nearest site that takes it

Charges and DIY waste

Since 31 December 2023, councils in England have not been allowed to charge householders for small amounts of DIY waste. The free allowance is generally up to two 50-litre bags, or one single item, per visit, and up to four visits in any four-week period. Above that a council may still charge. Staffordshire is the one council here that publishes a price list: those two bags free, then £4 a bag, with rubble, soil, stone, tiles and turf at £4 a bag, plaster and gypsum at £6 a bag and tyres at £6 each (chargeable items). Rubble, soil, turf and plasterboard are the usual limited items elsewhere too, often capped by weight or bags per month. Trade waste is not household waste, so if a contractor generated it they must dispose of it, and Japanese knotweed must not go to a recycling centre in the ordinary way.

When a collection beats six trips to the tip

A family car takes four or five bulging bags of green waste before you cannot see out of the back, and a moderately overgrown garden produces far more. So the real comparison is five or six trips, each with a booked slot, fuel, queueing and loading, against one visit from a van. Our price card puts green waste collection at about £80 for a car boot's worth up to about £330 for a full van, and garden clearance at £220–£320 light, £380–£600 moderate and £650–£1,000 heavy, waste included, with a free survey over £1,200. See the garden clearance cost guide and how much garden waste fits in a van.

We are an introducer: we pass your enquiry to one local specialist covering your area. Whoever takes your waste, check they are on the Environment Agency's register of waste carriers first, because a fly-tipped load traced back to you is your problem too (fly-tipping and the cheap man with a van).

Questions

Can I use a tip in a different borough?

Generally no. Every council here restricts its sites to its own residents, and most check ID at the barrier; Sandwell will not even let a non-resident book. The exception is a formal arrangement between councils, such as Solihull's asbestos permit sending its residents to Coventry.

Do I need to book to go to the tip?

In most of the region, yes. Solihull, Sandwell, Dudley and Coventry require a booking for everyone, and Birmingham normally does too. Walsall and Wolverhampton let cars turn up but require vans and trailers to book.

Is it cheaper to take garden waste to the tip myself?

For a bootful, yes: the tip is free for household and garden waste at every site here. For a whole garden, the arithmetic changes once you count booked slots, fuel and several hours of loading.
